| Transfussion Blood |
Indian government's good intentions to provide free blood transfusions in people with thalassemia can be fatal. At least 23 children from disadvantaged groups who received transfusions instead of contracting HIV, the virus triggers deadly AIDS.
All the victims, amounting to 23 people are children with thalassemia aged 5-10 years, all from disadvantaged groups. These children do need regular blood transfusions, so that the government intends to eliminate the fee.
Thalassemia is a genetic disorder that causes the body fails to produce the protein globulin. Deficiency of this protein causes the blood not working properly, so an infected should undergo regular blood transfusions in order not to collapse because of anemia.
Local government spokesman, Jai Narayan Vyas said it was currently investigating the case. As reported by some local media, Vyas said that the children are infected not only from one hospital alone.
But the Indian Express newspaper quoted from Dailymail, Tuesday (13/08/2011) reported, the victim's parents claimed their children infected only from government-owned hospitals. So far no casualties were infected with HIV at a private hospital.
Meanwhile, as quoted by the BBC, the world health organization's data or the WHO indicate that the number of people living with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) in India is quite high at 2.3 million people. The state of Gujarat along with Bihar and Uttar Pradesh became the largest contributor which is 22 percent.
HIV transmission in health facilities is not this just happened. Some time ago, 5 patients in two major hospitals in Taiwan get a transplant or organ transplant because of procedural errors, it later became known donor is HIV.
Earlier in the United States, thousands of diabetic patients in a clinic was forced to undergo the examination because of her nurse one injection. Nurses who had practiced since 2006 it has been feared transmitting HIV to their patients.
